frequently asked questions

How big are your hoops?

Tailspin hoops come in two sizes: adult and child.  Our adult hoops run approximately 42 inches in diameter, and our child-size hoops are 36 inches in diameter.  25-inch hoops for small children* are available by custom order.

Why are the adult-sized hoops so big?

Adults: have you tried using a toy-store-bought hoop lately?  Wow, is it hard!  Why?  Because as adults, we’re just bigger than we used to be.  The low weight and smaller diameter of a child’s hoop makes it really difficult to use.  Tailspin’s adult-sized hoops are designed for an adult body, so you can keep it going much easier!  Plus, all of our adult hoops have a swirl of “grip tape” on them, that helps the hoop to “stick” better (which means less clattering to the floor as you’re learning!)

If you think you might need a hoop larger than our standard 42 inches (if you have a larger waist size or are over 6’ tall), we would happy to make you a slightly larger hoop.  Your hula hoop should, when you stand it on end, come somewhere between your waist and chest...  So at 42 inches, Tailspin’s hoops will fit most adults.  But if you need a different size, just e-mail us and ask!

What the heck is “hooping”, anyway?

Hooping, or hoopdance, is a great way to shake your booty and feel like a kid again!  It’s part dance, part workout, and 100% fun.  All you need is a hoop, your favorite music, and a little bit of room, and you’re ready to go!

*Please note that these specialty hoops may not be suitable for very young children, as the decorative tape may be pulled off and pose a choking hazard if put in the mouth.

Hooping sounds like a blast!  How do I learn all of those cool moves?

We hope to have a beginner hooping class organized sometime in the Spring of 2008. In the meantime, we highly recommend the Hoopnotica DVD series to get you started; the instruction on both DVDs is very clear and thorough.  Another fun instructional video is Hoopgirl’s “Hoopdance for Beginners” -- it features performances of all of the moves taught on the DVD.  All three DVDs are available at amazon.com, by clicking on the links below.
